While talking to a slow learner’s mother I asked her if her daughter feels insecure in some way. Let me share an example from this morning. Usually behind every unsuccessful performer there is some problem that is related to her/his mind or psychology and in most cases the problem stems from a family matter. It is vital to talk to their guardians and know about their family backgrounds. S/he needs to interact with the slow learners more often so that s/he can keep a record of every movement of the learner and adopt ways in which the slow learner can be guided. Teachers are required to find out the main reason behind the learner’s weak performance. In case of reluctant learners, the key is to motivate them, to show them how it (education in general and a specific lesson in particular) is related to our life. Encouraging words and phrases may bring about a positive impact on the slow learners and will boost them to perform better. So, the first responsibility of the teacher is to build up confidence among these learners and make them believe that they are no less than others. Slow learners are very sensitive and self-conscious as they are very well aware of their weakness in comparison with the fast learners. A reluctant learner is not motivated and can also be passive or aggressive, creating more problems for teachers and parents through non-cooperation. A slow learner initially wants to learn, but has a problem with the process. Slow learners differ from reluctant learners. Thus it is crucial that the teacher can manage both the groups and yet make the lesson interesting.įirstly, it is very important to identify slow learners from reluctant learners. If the pace of the lesson is fast then the teacher would lose the slow learners and if the pace is slow then the fast learners will be bored. While it is a great idea not to discriminate children in any scale in the context of classrooms however, all the teachers have to experience a challenge that occurs when one child finishes a task in ten minutes and another one cannot complete that in thrice the time. Each child should be dealt differently as each individual is different than the other. I would like to recognise the fact first that according to some scholars, there is no such thing as slow/weak learners and fast/strong learners.
